Porvoo is Finland's second oldest town. People come from all over the world to see the Old Town - and no wonder - it is unique. Although it lives in the present, many aspects of the area have been left untouched by the passage of time - above all the atmosphere! A leisurely walk, a visit to a museum or exhibition, a break to enjoy a tasty meal or a drink - these are the most popular ingredients of an excursion to Porvoo. But why not this time spend the night and continue the next day without any hurry. Walking north you will find the old railway station area. Walking south you come to the river bank or you can continue out towards the sea. In summer there are plenty of things to do and see in Porvoo: our weekly programme gives many hints. Porvoo is just an hour’s drive from Helsinki along the E18 highway. Many bus services operate every hour between Helsinki and Porvoo. For example, there are daily yearround departures from Helsinki at 8.50am, 10.15am, 10.30am, 11.15am and 12.30pm and from Porvoo at 4.45pm, 5.30pm, 6.15pm, 6.40pm and 7.15pm. Tickets cost one way € 10,30-13,20/adult.
The most popular place for visits in Porvoo is by far Old Town and the beautiful Cathedral (the third most popular church in Finland as measured in number of visitors!). The Cathedral has been repaired and visitors arriving from the west are greeted from afar by its massive profile. Porvoo Museum in the Old Town Hall is open once again following repair work. The displays depict people and events in the area. The best way to find out about local history is to go on one of the guided walking tours, which are organised almost daily in summer
